Richard is Head of Crane Engineering Services at Solis Marine, acting on behalf of P&I and H&M insurers, brokers, lawyers and shipowners/managers/operators. His responsibilities include conducting crane damage investigations, preparing expert reports for arbitration and court proceedings, carrying out damage surveys and offering loss prevention support to marine insurers.
With over 25 years of specialised experience in ship-based and shore-side crane engineering and lifting equipment, Richard has extensive expertise in worldwide crane procurement, maintenance, surveys, damage investigations and providing expert witness services for port operators, owners, insurers and financial institutions. He has provided oral evidence during depositions and arbitration hearings, with his expert reports being utilised in arbitration and court proceedings.
Before joining Solis Marine, Richard served as Engineering Manager for Associated British Ports (ABP) in the UK, managing the Humber region's mechanical and electrical lifting equipment and port infrastructure equipment. His responsibilities included maintaining all existing equipment, procuring new equipment, and conducting marine accident investigations.
Previously, as Engineering Manager for Mathews Mechanical in the USA, Richard's work involved the designing and servicing of cranes and other lifting equipment. He was also responsible for surveys, maintenance and installation of lifting equipment.
During his time as Senior Project Engineer progressing to Vice President at Crane Consultants in the USA, his work encompassed worldwide crane procurement, maintenance, surveys, damage investigations and expert witness services. He prepared expert reports for arbitration and court proceedings for port operators, owners, insurers and financial institutions, working extensively throughout the USA.
Richard also has experience as a Project Engineer/Project Manager for Sealand, where his focus was on the engineering design and field modification of existing STS cranes from Panamax to Post-Panamax vessels.
